Context

Empowerment, Voice and Accountability for Better Health and Nutrition (EVA-BHN) is a four-year Project funded by UK Department for International Development (DFID) as part of its assistance to Government of Pakistan. A consortium being led by Palladium International is implementing the Project. Centre for Communication Programs Pakistan (Center) is one of the consortium members responsible for undertaking a set of media interventions to build demand for health services and improve health seeking behaviors. The project is implemented in two provinces of Pakistan, namely Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Introduction

Center, in partnership with Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, organized a workshop for journalists and reporters on rights-based health reporting from April 13-16, 2015. This workshop focused on capacity strengthening of local journalists and reporters specifically from Punjab and KPK. The workshop aimed at their capacity strengthening by introducing them to the human rights approach to health journalism and sharpening their skills in story-based reportage, the art of constructing human-interest stories and developing case studies. The workshop included sessions on RMNCH and nutrition issues; Human Rights Approach to Journalism; and technical production skills to develop more engaging story-based journalism.

In post-workshop engagement, Center is providing support to participants of the workshop by sharing newly published reports, access to data and expert opinion to encourage journalists for writing or covering health issues. Among the trained journalists, seven have been identified as mentors who will be training district based journalists in all of the project districts.
