Context

Empowerment, Voice and Accountability for Better Health and Nutrition (EVA-BHN) is a four-year Project funded by UK Department for International Development (DFID) as part of its assistance to Government of Pakistan. A consortium being lead by GRM FUTURES GROUP is implementing the Project. Centre for Communication Programs Pakistan (Center) is one of the consortium members responsible for undertaking a set of media interventions to build demand for health services and improve health seeking behaviors. The project is implemented in two provinces of Pakistan, namely Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Introduction

Center, in partnership with Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, organized a workshop for journalists and reporters on rights-based health reporting from April 13-16, 2015. This workshop focused on capacity strengthening of local journalists and reporters specifically from Punjab and KPK. The workshop aimed at their capacity strengthening by introducing them to the human rights approach to health journalism and sharpening their skills in story-based reportage, the art of constructing human-interest stories and developing case studies. The workshop included sessions on RMNCH and nutrition issues; Human Rights Approach to Journalism; and technical production skills to develop more engaging story-based journalism.
In post-workshop engagement, Center is providing support to participants of the workshop by sharing newly published reports, access to data and expert opinion to encourage journalists for writing or covering health issues. This support will be provided for the period of four months i.e. end of August 2015 and will expectedly result in having increased reportage on health and specially RMNCH and nutrition issues, not just by participating journalists but also by their peers through creating discourse around health issues. A peer review session is also planned with participating journalists in which they will assess critique their own work. Prior to this and also to gauge the impact of the intervention, a media content analysis is required to assess the status of health reporting with four months pre and post-intervention period from the dates of the workshop.


Scope of Work and Deliverable
Media content analysis will cover scanning and monitoring of media contents of health and specifically RMNCH and nutrition. The contents including stories, press releases, news items, articles, columns and other similar news items of four months prior to workshop i.e. January-April 2015 as well as after the workshop from May-August 2015 will be scanned and monitored through this exercise. The mainstream newspapers and media channels will include Express tribune, The News, Dawn, The Nation, Daily Mushriq and Daily Jang. From TV channels ARY News, News One and Dawn News will be reviewed for the purpose of this analysis.

Content Analysis requires three full-time Research Associates for short duration to

  • Analysis of both hard and soft copies/ online websites and other resources on the basis of prescribed formats;
  • Maintenance of a database of all selected stories, news items, video-clips on already developed database sheet.
  • Presentation of results by applying simple data analysis techniques, preferably on Excel or any other similar software; and
  • Development of individual work plans with weekly targets for approval of Senior Media Manager and sharing weekly updated database sheet for review and feedback.

Timeframe:

The assignment is expected to be completed in three months starting from July 2015 ending in September 2015.

Reporting:

Research Associate will report to Senior Media Manager EVA BHN who will supervise the assignment while senior management of CCP for provision of administrative oversight.

Minimum Requirements:
Fresh graduate from a recognized university inside or outside Pakistan may apply; graduating students are also encouraged to apply
Excellent skills in MS Office, especially in data process software, i.e. Excel
Experience of working on research projects, small or large-scale
Excellent written and spoken communication skills
