About Karandaaz Pakistan                                                                                                                 

Karandaaz Pakistan (KRN) is a private sector led Special Purpose Vehicle working with market-based institutions to create jobs and promote financial inclusion in Pakistan through enterprise growth, digital financial services and knowledge management. Karandaaz Pakistan has 3 founding partners: DFID, BMGF (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor).

To achieve its goals Karandaaz Pakistan will use a variety of financing instruments. One of such instruments will be Digital Finance. Digital Financial Services will advance the digital finance agenda within Pakistan through a variety of tools including investments, advocacy, and research. Through this workstream, Karandaaz’s long-term Financial Inclusion related strategic goals will be kept in line with donor goals and imperatives, and promoted within the industry. Relationships with key partners such as the government, international donors, telcos, banks, and investors will be managed and maintained.


Objective of Assignment                                

The intern will be expected to support the Digital Financial Services practice area, as directed by the Task Manager through research, analysis, and writing and other support as needed.  Specifically, the key activities of the intern will involve the following:

  • Collating information from disparate sources (internal and external sources) into a more coherent and presentable format;
  • Assisting with the strategy and planning of several events related to the promotion of Karandaaz as a champion of financial inclusion;
  • Following up on research with key stakeholders in Pakistan mobile money market;
  • Other tasks as requested by the Task Manager

Job Responsibilities                                                                                        

  • Gathering data from internal databases, removing duplicates, reconciling with own research;
  • Formatting final data for robust recordkeeping;
  • Handling the logistics of event planning, with guidance from Task Manager;
  • Completing research related to surveys being conducted with local branchless banking stakeholders.

Duration of Assignment                                 

This is a 25 working days assignment over a 3 calendar month period (from April 6th, 2015 to June 15th, 2015), extendable by mutual consent of both the parties. Selected intern will be given a a stipend equal to PKR 1000 per day.


Expected Deliverable(s)                                                                                                         

  • Internal database(s) cleaned up
  • Raw data for research report completely filled out as per templates provided.
  • Successful completion of all logistics related to event planning and execution

The required language for written deliverables is English unless otherwise specified.

Necessary Skills and Experience                                                                    

  • Completed/Enrolled in Bachelor’s programme in economics, finance, business or public administration or related field.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical capacity; preferably in inclusive finance area
  • Excellent computer capabilities;
  • Excellent organizational, inter-personal, communication and administrative skills;
  • Able to take initiative and work independently, with minimum supervision;
  • Able to work effectively in a team and in an international environment;
  • Fluency in English and strong English writing skills;
  • Discretion and respect for confidentiality;

Ownership/Control of Work Product/Publication     

All materials produced or acquired during the appointment - written, graphic, film, digital audio/video or otherwise - shall remain the property of KRN unless and to the extent such rights are explicitly relinquished (in whole or in part) by KRN, in writing.  KRN furthermore retains the exclusive right to publish or disseminate in all languages reports arising from such materials. In the event of early termination of the appointment or non-renewal upon its expiration, the intern shall, if requested by KRN, deliver to it copies of all materials and data developed with KRN funds.Any material developed by the Intern under these TORs shall not be used without written prior approval by KRN the Task Manager.
