Context

In January 2014, international NGO CRS and its local partner organization the Community Development Foundation (CDF) launched a three-year education pilot project aimed at improving the quality of education provided in target government primary schools in UC Balochabad, Jacobabad District, northern Sindh Province. One component of the project focuses extensively on working with government primary teachers to improve their skills and teaching techniques through trainings, mentoring visits, and peer group work.

 

Teacher Trainer Objectives and Expected Results

Teacher Trainer Requirements

Teacher trainer will provide a week-long training to 40-45 government primary school teachers in Jacobabad town.

Training Objectives

The selected teacher trainer will be responsible for designing and executing 2 three-day teacher trainings for government primary school teachers. The focus of the teacher training will be on how to teach mathematics to the students of Grade One and Grade Two. Trainer will model interactive, child-centered techniques for teaching basic mathematics (in line with the Pakistan National curriculum) to children Grade 1, and Grade 2.

Objectives for the training include:

  1. Introduce the basic concepts of mathematics subject for Grade One and Grade Two Students.

  2. Provide teachers with examples of different techniques of teaching mathematics 

  3. How to make mathematics a simple and joyful subject for students of Grade One and Grade Two

 

Required Dates                                                                                                                              The teacher training will take place in Jacobabad town from Monday, January 26th through Saturday, January 31st, 2015 for a total duration of six (6) days.[1] Training times will be from 8:30am until 4:30pm, with an hour break from 1:00-2:00pm for lunch.

Trainer is expected to arrive in Sukkur on Wednesday, January 21st to work with the CRS Education Team for three days to finalize training resources and review the training plan.

Methodology

Teaching basic concepts of mathematics through joyful learning techniques

The teacher trainer will focus on providing teachers will an overview of different concepts for teaching mathematics in a joyful method. Teaching techniques should be taught through lesson modeling with lessons from the Pakistan National curriculum and not simply as isolated activities.  

 

Child-centered techniques and demos

Training should focus on interactive, child-centered ways in which to teach mathematics to children Grade 1, and Grade 2. The trainer will be required to provide a demo of teaching each concept as an example for the participants. As stated above, all lessons should be in line with the Pakistan National curriculum. Teacher trainer should allot time during the training to review basic mathematics to ensure that all teachers have an understanding of each concept.  

 

Teacher practice and modeling

In addition to introducing new teaching methodologies, teacher trainer should have sessions that allow teachers to practice their skills in peer groups. Each day, after introducing 1-4 new concepts, time should be set aside for teachers to apply new skills through lesson modeling and peer review.

Outputs/Deliverables[2]

  1. Provide copy of draft teacher training manual and lessons to CRS Education Team by Monday, January 19th for review and feedback

  2. Collaborate with CRS Education Team through Skype or phone to make modifications/changes to training plan from Monday, January 19th to Wednesday, January 21st.

  3. Meet in-person with CRS Education Team starting from Wednesday, January 21st to Friday, January 23rd to review the training plan and finalize all training resources

  4. Conduct 2 three-day (total 6 days) teacher training in Jacobabad town with approximately 40 government primary school teachers

  5. Provide CRS and teachers with soft copies of all resources used during the training (to be shared with teachers)

Consultant Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in Education

  2. At least 2-3 years of previous experience as a teacher trainer

  3. Fluency in Sindhi Language

  4. Demonstrated knowledge of Pakistan Government curriculum for primary school education

  5. Demonstrated knowledge on teaching mathematics in a child centered method

  6. Already-developed teacher training manuals a plus

  7. Previous experience working with international NGOs a plus

Consultant Fees                                                                                                                                

Teacher trainer is requested to provide a proforma with his/her daily fee rates at the time of application.

CRS will provide accommodation in Jacobabad at a local hotel, transportation between Sukkur and Jacobabad, and per diem for any meals not included in the teacher training. Per diem rates are based on CRS’ national per diem policy. Reimbursement for transportation to and from Sukkur to teacher trainer’s location of employment will also be discussed.

Requirements

Candidate must submit all documents listed below in a closed/sealed envelope with no writing on it.

 

Required documents include:

  • A note acknowledging understanding of the SoW and any proposed amendments

  • CV

  • References from at least 2 recent teacher trainings who can discuss candidate’s performance

  • Tentative training plan

  • Examples of 1-2 lessons from past trainings (if possible)

  • Teacher training manual (if possible)

  • Proposed daily fees (please provide a proforma with fees broken out by type of cost)

 

Selection

A selection committee will evaluate each candidate’s file and contact only those candidates who are selected for an interview/further discussion.
