Background
HelpAge International has worked with partners in Pakistan for over 10 years, particularly on an ophthalmic project with PMI (Karachi) and more recently with Merlin on Emergencies work. In December 2009 we commissioned a Desk Study on Policy and Programs for Older Persons in Pakistan by the Pakistan National Centre on Ageing which we hope will be the basis for developing longer term development and emergency response/disaster risk reduction work in Pakistan.
In early 2009, HelpAge International opened a new Regional Office for South Asia in Bangladesh to coordinate its work with partners in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.
With the advent of the floods in early August 2010 HAI is now expanding its work rapidly with the aim of responding to immediate relief needs and laying the ground for longer term recovery and development activities.
Purpose of the job
- The Research & Advocacy Officer will support the Senior Manager Policy Research & Advocacy in organizing the PRA Unit activities, with primary focus on outreach & mainstreaming through seminars, conferences, specific campaigns and networking initiatives.
- S/he will also assist the Senior Manager PRA in the ongoing research & advocacy initiatives, and acts as a resource on Research & advocacy to both HelpAge staff and its partners.
- S/he will generate evidence based advocacy material & messages under the guidance of Senior Manager PRA.
Job Responsibilities & Tasks
- Assist the Senior Manager PRA in designing, planning and implementing of research & advocacy strategy, and in mounting advocacy campaigns
- Designing research study tools and training of field staff on their delivery
- Organizing seminars, workshops and discussions, including communication with speakers, media and stakeholders & invitees.
- Write seminar reports and undertake & document background research on the topics of mainstreaming
- Assist PRA manager in writing up budgets and take care of logistics for speakers, invitees and participants.
- Responsible for special campaigns and liaison with HelpAge programs
- Actively participate and represent the organization in various networks and campaigns to help mainstream HelpAge Age & Development agenda.
- Support the process to form networks with various stakeholders such as development sector donors, CSOs, private sector, research organizations and academic institutions, to help mobilize their support for sustainable development initiatives.
- Represent HelpAge in other forums (Aging and disability task force, cluster meetings and other networking forums)
- Any other related administrative or management responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Master's degree in political science, development studies, English communications or MBA
- 3-4 years’ experience in same capacity
